Publié depuis le Pays basque français mais rédigé en français et en anglais, Battles a réuni une « brigade poids moyen » de contributeurs des deux côtés de l'Atlantique : Charles Vasey, Philip Sabin, John D. Burtt, David Hughes, Frédéric Bey, Laurent Closier, et bien d'autres. La devise du magazine, « Une brute qui marche ira toujours plus loin que deux intellectuels assis », résume son ton mêlant sérieux ludologique et autodérision. Published from the French Basque Country but written in French and English, Battles gathered a “middleweight brigade” of contributors from both sides of the Atlantic: Charles Vasey, Philip Sabin, John D. Burtt, David Hughes, Frédéric Bey, Laurent Closier and many others. The magazine's motto, “Une brute qui marche ira toujours plus loin que deux intellectuels assis”, captures its blend of design theory and self-mockery.

Chaque numéro s'accompagnait d'un jeu encarté avec carte et pions prédécoupés, souvent original : « Striking the Anvil » (Provence 1944), « Counter-Attack! Arras » (1940), « A Week in Hell » (Hué), « White October » (Petrograd 1919), « Into the Bastards! » (premiers chars), « Growling Tigers » (Changde), « Wagram 1809 », « The Flowers of the Forest » (Flodden), « War of Tanks » (France 1940) ou « Amigos and Insurrectos » (Philippines). Each issue came with a pull-out game featuring a map and die-cut counters, often an original design: “Striking the Anvil” (Provence 1944), “Counter-Attack!
